Statement urging G7 leaders to express concerns over Hong Kong
Anti-extradition protesters in Hong Kong have been facing violent suppression since June. Footages show that Beijing government plans to launch a bloody crackdown with Chinese military army. Hong Kong's human rights and freedom are on the brink of collapse. Demosisto now urges G7 summit leaders to express concerns over Hong Kong's situation.
As an international financial centre, Hong Kong plays an indispensable role in the global financial system. And Hong Kong’s status and way of life are guaranteed by the Sino-British Joint Declaration. However, Beijing repeatedly regarded the Joint Declaration as an “historical document” with no practical significance in recent years. That casts doubt on whether the promise of autonomy and freedom in the Joint Declaration could still be fully respected and implemented. The international community is at stake if Hong Kong's autonomy and freedom are under threat from China.
Therefore, we urge G7 leaders should make clear that Beijing should fully abide by the terms and spirits of the Sino-British Joint Declaration, stop all kinds of suppressions against democracy and freedom fighters in Hong Kong, and immediately fulfill the people's demands. International leaders should also clearly state to President Xi that, if Beijing disclaims its responsibility to uphold any international treaty like Sino-British Joint Declaration, his government's willingness to uphold its commitments to any bilateral agreements with other countries would be challenged.
