【RESPONSE TO THE 5TH TERM CHIEF EXECUTIVE ELECTION】

Carrie Lam, the former Chief Secretary of Administration, was chosen today as Hong Kong’s next Chief Executive by a small committee of 1,194 members overwhelmingly dominated by pro-establishment electors. A Beijing-endorsed hardliner, she received only 777 votes but will be the leader of a city of over 7.3 million for the next five years.

Lam’s victory despite her lack of representation and popular support reflects the Chinese Communist Party’s complete control over Hong Kong’s electoral process and its serious intrusion of Hong Kong’s autonomy.

This result is a nightmare to Hong Kongers. She will take the oath of office on 1 July, the 20th anniversary of Hong Kong’s handover, which will likely be administered by Chinese President Xi Jinping during his expected visit to Hong Kong.

On that day, therefore, we will organize a large civil disobedience protest in order to make the international community aware of China’s neglect of the Sino-British Joint Declaration. Hong Kongers demand genuine universal suffrage. Hong Kongers demand an election rather than a selection. Hong Kongers fear that ‘One Country, Two Systems’ will continue to erode, eventually becoming ‘One Country, One-and-a-Half System’, or even ‘One Country, One System’.

But it is our hope that those who have previously fought, and continues to fight, for fair political representation in Hong Kong will not lose momentum over the next half-decade as a consequence. Democracy, our destination, is still far ahead, which requires patience and persistence to reach.

Beginning today, the opposition shall reunite to become an effective force of resistance against authoritarianism.
